Somersham Baptist Church Bicentenary Celebration

This year we are celebrating 200 years since the Baptist Meeting House was built. The founder of the church responsible was Mr Coxe Feary, a Bluntisham farmer.

In his "Memorials" he writes: '1786, May 17th. This evening I walked to Somersham, and for the first time preached there, from Ephes. ii. 1 3. The barn was very full, my mind was in some degree at liberty, the people very serious, and I hope the Lord was with us of a truth." For some time meetings were held in the barn, till, their numbers increasing, the friends there decided to have a regular place of worship, and we are told by Mr Audley "Mr Feary having several members and friends at Somersham, two miles from Bluntisham, to whom he preached lectures, they were desirous of a more comfortable place than that in which they had worshipped for their occasional meetings. Ground therefore was purchased, and a very neat meeting-house erected, which was opened in the spring of 1812."

On Saturday 19th May we will be processing through the village, in period dress, starting at the Victory Hall and finishing at the Meeting House where we will be having a service based around the first sermon Mr Coxe Feary preached. This will be followed in the evening with a Barn Dance at the Victory Hall. If you would like to attend this then please contact a member of the church since places are limited.

The service on Sunday 20th May will be a celebration of 200 years of the church where we will be reflecting on the past and looking to the future for what God has planned for our church. We are pleased to welcome Dr Nigel Wright the Principal of Spurgeons College, where our minister has been training for the past 3 years, who will be joining us for the service and sharing Gods message with us.
